What is a Public Regulation Commission (PRC)?
A public regulation commission (PRC) is generally a regulatory body at the state level responsible for regulating utilities that
provide service within a state. The commission is comprised of either state-elected or state-appointed officials. These members
regulate all electric, gas, water, cable and telephone retail in many states, and are also generally responsible for ensuring that
utilities are responsive to customers' needs and service requests, and that service is both adequate and reliable.
How New Mexico PRC describes itself:
The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission is constitutionally created and is charged by the Legislature with regulating public utilities, telecommunications companies, and insurance companies to the extent necessary to provide just and reasonable rates and to assure reasonable, adequate and efficient service for the public. In addition, the Commission is charged with the duties of assuring pipeline and fire safety and with the registration of corporations and compliance with applicable laws.
