What is a Public Utilities Commission (PUC)?
A public utilities commission (PUC) is generally a regulatory body at the state level responsible for regulating utilities that
provide service within a state. The commission is comprised of either state-elected or state-appointed officials. These members
regulate all electric, gas, water, cable and telephone retail in many states, and are also generally responsible for ensuring that
utilities are responsive to customers' needs and service requests, and that service is both adequate and reliable.
How Nevada PUC describes itself:
The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) regulates water and sewer companies, natural gas companies, electric companies, telephone companies, some propane systems, gas and electric "master meter" service at mobile home parks, and is involved in gas pipeline and railroad safety. The PUCN also has limited jurisdiction over co-ops, mutuals, and non-profits, such as some small water companies or homeowners' associations.
