What is a Public Utilities Commission (PUC)?
A public utilities commission (PUC) is generally a regulatory body at the state level responsible for regulating utilities that
provide service within a state. The commission is comprised of either state-elected or state-appointed officials. These members
regulate all electric, gas, water, cable and telephone retail in many states, and are also generally responsible for ensuring that
utilities are responsive to customers' needs and service requests, and that service is both adequate and reliable.
How Idaho PUC describes itself:
The Idaho Public Utilities Commission serves the citizens and utilities of Idaho by determining fair, just and reasonable rates for utility commodities and services which are to be delivered safely, reliably and efficiently. In 1999, motor carrier responsibilities were transferred to the Department of Law Enforcement and Idaho Transportation Department, with Idaho PUC retaining its jurisdiction in rail carrier matters.
